Tenant Advice & Referrals

Alex is no longer representing tenants in lawsuits or Rent Board petitions, beginning in November 2023. Alex is instead beginning a one-of-a-kind tenant advice service, where Alex will meet with tenants for 50 minutes for a flat fee of $100 in order to provide one-time advice. You can book such an appointment using the “Book Now” button above. If Alex believes (in their subjective judgment) that you are being screwed over, they may refund the consultation fee, minus processing fees. Alex will provide legal referrals, where appropriate, explain how systems work, and provide their best advice based on past representation of hundreds of tenants.

Habitability & Repairs

Habitability issues include the presence of mold, insects, and rodents, as well as many things in your home being out-of-repair. You as a tenant are rarely responsible for the cost of repairs, but getting a landlord to actually make repairs or address problems is often a different story.

Habitability issues happen to everyone, but not all landlords fix the problems in a timely manner. If you’ve tried obtaining repairs from your landlord on your own, or called code enforcement agencies and the problems remain, let’s talk about your options.

Lease Negotiation

Tenants often feel like they have no power when it comes to negotiating a lease agreement. Alex is here to say that you can have power! San Francisco is a renter’s market right now--don’t give away more rights than you need to.

Negotiated Buyouts

Negotiated Buyouts are (almost) unique to San Francisco, but in San Francisco they play a major role as an alternative to eviction lawsuits. Buyouts occur when a landlord cannot or does not want to evict a tenant, but wants their tenants to vacate the property.

Many housing rights organizations and activists think “Buyout” is a bad word. However, Buyouts can be very beneficial to tenants, especially with the right legal guidance.

Wrongful Eviction

If you feel like you’ve been evicted from your home in an improper or illegal way, due to discrimination, lack of repairs, lack of following the correct court process, lockouts, retaliation, or other reasons, set up a consultation!

Discrimination

Housing discrimination is widespread in Northern California. Whether on the basis of race, national origin, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, age, religion, parental or familial status, or source of income, discrimination in housing is experienced by many people and is inherently wrong. Whether your goal is different treatment or monetary compensation, we can discuss the options available to you.

S.F. Rent Board Practice

Alex has represented numerous clients in front of the San Francisco Rent Board. These cases tend to address long-term habitability issues or illegal rent increases, but the Rent Board has the power to hear many types of cases. The Rent Board is designed so that tenants can bring a case without an attorney.
